The company also provides consultancy services, including system engineering and feasibility studies, environmental and social impact assessment, design and engineering, contract, project management and construction supervision, owner's and lender's engineer, and other services, as well as engineering, procurement, and asset management. Power Grid Corporation of India Limited offers its consultancy services to state owned utilities, private utilities, central public sector undertakings, and government departments in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Congo, Ethiopia, Fiji, Nigeria, Nepal, Kazakhstan, Kenya, the Kyrgyz Republic, Myanmar, Pakistan, Senegal, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Tanzania, the United Arab Emirates, and Uzbekistan. In addition, it provides overhead optic fiber network services using optical ground wire on power transmission lines under the POWERTEL brand name. The company was formerly known as National Power Transmission Corporation Limited and changed its name to Power Grid Corporation of India Limited in October 1992.
